THE BOOK INQUIRY
THE BOOK INQUIRY is a concentrated engagement for writers who are wishing to step outside the usual process of writing and editing in order to look with fresh eyes at a book they have underway.
You may be crafting your book independently, or you may be working alongside an editor, writing coach, ghostwriter, agent, or publishing team. THE BOOK INQUIRY is not intended to replace that work. It offers another kind of attention to the ideas, architecture, questions, tensions, and possibilities within the book itself.
At the center of this offering is a question that guides much of my work:
“What am I not seeing?”
There may be an unexplored thread, a larger question, a missing chapter, a structural possibility, or an entire dimension of the book that would strengthen it greatly, but which has not yet found its way onto the page. Or the inquiry may simply bring greater clarity to what the book already knows itself to be.
There is no predetermined answer we are seeking to find. The purpose of this consultation is not to prescribe what the work should become, but to create enough space and attention to notice what else might wish to be there.
THE INQUIRY…
Before we meet, you’ll send a curated selection of materials that allows me to enter the world of the project: typically a table of contents, outline or synopsis, and one or two sample chapters.
I’ll spend time reading and listening into the work in advance.
We’ll then meet for a private two-hour conversation devoted entirely to the book: what it is doing, what it is asking, and what possibilities may become visible when we turn slightly and look at it again.
Following our conversation, I’ll send written reflections gathering the central questions, observations, and possibilities that emerged.
